Dr Emma Castell
Clinical Psychologist & Yoga Teacher
Who is your ideal client?
My ideal client would be a young adult (18 – 30), seeking help with managing stress and/ or anxiety. I enjoy working with someone who would like to develop an understanding of their distress/ emotions, helping them to feel “less stuck”, bringing awareness to the mind-body connection and recognising that there are different ways to manage their emotions to help change the impact on their day to day life.
Emma also works with children and young people.
Emma is based in Devon, and sees clients nearby for face-to-face therapy, as well as online.
How do you help them?
My usual models of working are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
My main aim when working with a client is to help them develop an understanding of any difficulties they are experiencing, guiding them to find a helpful way of managing how the difficulties are affecting them in the present moment and develop a “tool box” (of skills and strategies) to draw upon when needed. I find it helpful to be aware of how the body and mind are interlinked – and help clients to recognise this link, tailoring the intervention to their needs.
I work collaboratively with clients to help them manage any distress or difficulty they are experiencing and offer support to help them in navigating the ups and downs of life. Through my work, I promote focusing in the present moment to help a client achieve their goals and work towards living a meaningful life.
What do you like about being a psychologist?
I like that through my work as a psychologist I have the opportunity to meet a range of people. I also value the opportunity to raise awareness of mental health and the importance of the mind – body connection.
I enjoy being creative in my work and like how my work constantly provides new learning experiences. I am grateful for the opportunities to support people to make and sustain change; and helping them to achieve their goals.
More about Emma:
I enjoy going for beach walks with my partner and dog; and being in the sea – swimming, surfing or paddleboarding. I also like travelling and exploring new places – more recently this has been road trips in our campervan. I am learning to ride a motorbike – and am enjoying the challenge! I practice yoga regularly and enjoy catching up with my yoga friends (from around the world) who I met whilst completing my yoga teacher training.
